Dr. Wisting has worked as a researcher at the Regional Department for Eating Disorders (RASP) since 2008. Her current research activities focus mainly on the comorbidity of diabetes and eating disorders. Her PhD project (a collaboration study with the Norwegian Childhood Diabetes Registry), and postdoc studies (under the umbrella project “Eating Disorders and DIabetes (EDDI)),” have focused on disturbed eating, psychological correlates, and metabolic control among adolescent- and adult patients with type 1 diabetes.
Ongoing Research
Eating Disorders and Diabetes (EDDI): Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a risk factor for the development of disturbed eating and eating disorders, with a 2-3 fold increased prevalence of eating disorders in individuals with T1D compared to healthy controls. Comorbid T1D and disturbed eating is associated with poor prognosis, with advanced onset of diabetes complications and increased mortality rates. The EDDI project has reported that disturbed eating behaviors are common among adolescents and adults with T1D, and associated with poor metabolic control (measured by HbA1c). Additionally, psychological correlates are found to significantly contribute to explain the variance in levels of both HbA1c and eating disorder psychopathology. Future EDDI studies, building on our previous research, are continually being planned.
