In thin air - The annual mountain trip

In August the Department of Cancer Prevention and friends from the Department of Genetics went on an annual mountain trip. This year’s destination for the eleven mountaineers was Jotunheimen, with Surtningsui, the 7th highest peak in Norway, as the primary goal.

That is

        up

            there

                 somewhere...

On our way up the long mountainside, we all agreed there was not much more to see than grey stone. But the anticipation of a spectacular view kept us going. In fact, the view is supposedly the best in Jotunheimen, partly because you then don’t actually have to look at Surtningsui itself! Luckily the sky cleared up for five minutes when we were at the top, allowing us to get a glimpse of pretty much all of Jotunheimen.

The next day we decided that we needed a different challenge! The 1360 meter ascent up to Surtningsui at 2368 above sea level took us ten hours. Climbing the very steep Bukkelegret, on the other hand, brought us up to approximately 1500 meters above sea level in only 1.5 hours. Indeed, we appreciated the helping hand from the bolted chains in the steepest parts!
