Norsk Hydros Fund for Cancer Research Lecture January 16th 10:45 Channing J. Der
The Norsk Hydro’s Fund for Cancer Research Lecture January 16th 10:45 - 12:00 in the Auditorium (K-building) at Montebello will be held by the prominent scientist Channing J. Der from UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Chapel Hill.
Title of his talk:
"Drugging undruggable RAS for cancer treatment"
Dr. Channing J. Der is recognized internationally for his contribution to the discovery and research of the Ras family of oncoproteins.
Dr. Der received his PhD in microbiology from the University of California, Irvine in 1981, and then pursued postdoctoral studies at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School under the supervision of Geoffrey M Cooper. It was there that he made a breakthrough discovery of the homology between the transforming genes in human bladder and lung carcinoma and the Ras-genes in the sarcoma viruses in 1982.
Dr. Der currently works as the Sarah Graham Kenan Professor of Pharmacology at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Since the 80s, his research has focused on elucidation of the mechanisms by which aberrant Ras signaling promotes malignant progression and growth of pancreatic, colorectal, lung, and other cancers. He has published over 300 research papers and has been a member of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
