We have selected to use a food-based strategy in our projects in contrast to the traditional nutrient based strategy that has dominated nutritional research.

We are utilizing a large array of research designs and protocols including advanced tools in analytical chemistry, mechanistic cell-based systems, novel transgenic reporter mice models as well as randomized clinical trials and prospective epidemiological studies. Expertise from a number of collaborators is integrated in the projects. By using bioinformatics and tools in systems biology we aim at integrate the information from different research designs and protocols into one valid physiological picture.

To facilitate testing of bioavailability and bioactivity we have developed a unique and novel type of transgenic reporter mouse model that enables real-time imaging of gene expression in living mice. Transgenic mice are constructed using the reporter luciferase controlled by small response elements or complete promoters. Following injection of the substrate, luciferin, light is detected by sensitive CCD video cameras.

By establishing this technique, we pioneered real-time in vivo optical imaging of gene expression in mid 1990ies. Numerous laboratories and research groups worldwide are now using the luciferase-based technology. Furthermore, the transgenic mouse models developed in the research group have been transferred to collaborative projects in more than 50 universities and research groups elsewhere.
