Educational pathways

Increasingly complex issues and patient needs have heightened the relevance of master's and PhD competencies at the Department of Transplantation. Over the past 10 years, the department has therefore offered education for nurses seeking a more academically oriented advanced education. This competence has proven to be important in our department. We have particularly observed that the quality of patient care improves when patient pathways are based on new, available knowledge.

In addition, emphasis is placed on the ability to engage in critical reflection and to develop and implement research results into clinical practice. For many years, the department has maintained close collaboration with universities and colleges, and in 2014, combined positions between the clinic and academia were established. This was done to ensure recruitment, provide good educational paths, and offer close follow-up of candidates in education at the Department of Transplantation

Master Education

There are many different master's programs, but most of our master’s students are enrolled in programs at the University of Oslo (UiO) or VID Specialized University. The master’s program at UiO is interdisciplinary, theory-driven, and integrates a broad range of research methods. The program’s ambition is to deliver forward-looking and socially relevant health research and high-quality education.

The master's program in clinical nursing at VID provides students with the opportunity to acquire advanced knowledge and assessment skills to practice the profession based on extensive insight into one of six nursing specializations. Nephrological nursing is one of the specializations included. The program promotes clinical nursing, ethical critical reflection, and contributes to value-conscious service development.

The master's program in clinical nursing at NTNU, Gjøvik Department, builds on further education and is experience-based. The program is particularly relevant for nurses with specialized training at our department. The focus is on specialized healthcare services, and students have the opportunity to delve into relevant subject areas within their field.

The master's programs take 2 years (full-time) or 3-4 years (part-time). Most of our master's students choose the part-time option to combine their studies with full-time employment. A contract is signed between the nearest supervisor and the candidate before starting the program, covering financial conditions, leave, and binding time. It is a requirement from the department that the master's thesis topic relates to patient care and is discussed with the supervisor. More information about the content and structure of the two master's programs can be found in the links below:

Doctoral Education - PhD

A PhD education is a research training program that offers the opportunity to work on research at the Department of Transplantation, often in a combined position as a clinician and researcher. Alternatively, you can be employed in a position within the department that demands substantial knowledge and skills but is not a research position.

Our PhD candidates are recruited from the department and are externally funded for 3- or 6-year programs. The candidates are usually affiliated with the Department of Interdisciplinary Health Sciences at the University of Oslo. The candidates are supervised by researchers at the Department of Transplantation. Our PhD candidates often participate in larger funded projects that are part of the prioritized research areas within our environment. Relevant research fields include patient education, health literacy, and quality of life in patients undergoing transplantation. Alternatively, PhD candidates can initiate their own research questions and develop their own projects, which can then be funded with the help of their supervisor. PhD candidates are part of established research groups in our clinical environment and at the university. More information about the PhD education at the University of Oslo can be found here:
