The Department of Rare Diagnoses and Disabilities consists of several competence centers with a national function: National Competence Center for Cystic Fibrosis, National Competence Center for Rare Epilepsy-Related Diagnoses, Center for Rare Diagnoses and National Competence Center for Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Hypersomnia. In addition to the national competence centers, there is a K.G. Jebsen Center for Medical Translational Research at the department. The competence centers are interdisciplinary and will conduct professional development and research related to their diagnoses.

The research group will stimulate research activity and work to coordinate projects. The department conducts projects related to disease presentation, disease mechanisms, treatment research, diagnostic optimization (advanced signal analysis/machine learning), somatic and mental additional difficulties and quality registration.
