The studies in PhD thesis focuses on the utilization of data from the Norwegian Cardiac Arrest Registry (NorCAR) for studies on out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). We assessed the case completeness by comparing cardiac arrest cases in NorCAR, with two national health registries. The study demonstrated a high case completeness in NorCAR. This validation process established that the NorCAR data were applicable for further studies. Secondly we assessed patient outcomes after the implementation of an Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (ECPR) protocol, comparing ECPR-eligible patient cohorts before and after introduction of the protocol. Notably, we found no difference in patient outcomes before and after the introduction of the protocol, and worse neurologic outcome were observed among survivors in the after cohort. Lastly, data from NorCAR were combined with data from three national health registries to describe patients’ healthcare utilization before and after experiencing cardiac arrest. The OHCA patients were found to have substantial morbidity and a frequent use of healthcare during the two years prior to the cardiac arrest, and the healthcare use remained significantly increased the year after the event. The healthcare use differed across primary, specialist, and mental healthcare services, and there were limited post-cardiac arrest rehabilitation contacts.
Collectively, the outcomes of this research underscore the completeness of NorCAR data, advocating its suitability for local and national quality improvement initiatives and research.
