Metastasis-promoting proteins

A long-lasting interest in the group has been functional studies of metastasis-promoting proteins of which S100A4 has been our main focus. We have contributed knowledge on how this protein enhances cancer cell migration and invasion through proteolytic degradation, through metabolic reprogramming and phenotype switching, and through secretion of cytokines which stimulate stromal cells to acquire angiogenic and inflammatory properties .

S100A4 from the microenvironment stimulates breast cancer cells to secret pro-inflammatory cytokines (1). The secreted factors convert monocytes into tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) (2), which stimulate phenotype switching (EMT), proliferation, chemoresistance and motility (Figure from Prasmickaite, Mol Oncol, 2018)
