Senior Consultant of Anaesthesiology and Senior Researcher at Oslo University Hospital and NAKOS. Since 1985 Dr Wik has been active in conducting clinical and experimental research into mechanical Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). Together with Professor Steen he established the experimental cardiac arrest program at the Institute of Experimental Medical Research at Ullevål University Hospital in the beginning of 1990’s and were crucial for implementing randomized clinical outcome studies utilizing the infrastructure of the prehospital Emergency Medicine Service and Hospitals in the Oslo area. Several studies have changed the International CPR Guidelines. The combination of studies exploring different experimental CPR methods in the animal lab, didactic CPR performance, clinical outcome and hemodynamic studies of patients is unique and document a broad approach to save more lives. Dr Wik was the Principal Investigator (PI) for the International Circulation Improving Resuscitation Care (CIRC) randomized controlled trial and led several clinical outcome studies (The SISTER study, CPR before defibrillation, IV Yes/No,) that have changed CPR Guidelines. Innovative studies related to avalanche and trauma have also documented how to save more lives. During the last years Dr Wik has been the PI for the first mechanical clinical active compression decompression studies (LUCAS 2 AD studies). During the last few years he has been influential in designing and performing randomized studies regarding use of biosensors and signal processing in prehospital care.
Dr Wik’s work has generated contributions to about 130 publications in top ranked journals resulting in several invitations worldwide to present at congresses.
Dr Wik actively practices clinical pre-hospital emergency medicine (last 40 years), regular shifts at Oslo University Hospital Anaesthesia department, and conducts advanced research on cardiac arrest and trauma while working with the rapid response car in Oslo. Dr Wik also holds several patents related to Emergency Medicine technology licensed to International Manufactories.
