Research biobanks and related research projects
A research biobank is a collection of human biological samples used for research. A research biobank is established when material is removed from a diagnostic or treatment biobank for a specific research project, or when new biological material is collected prospectively for research purposes. The latter is referred to as a general or thematic biobank without a specific research project attached to it; the goal is that research projects will be able to apply to use this material.
Research biobanks must have external approval from REC, internal approval from the department, and written patient consent allowing use of samples for research purposes.
Our department has a number of ongoing REC-approved biobank-based research projects, as well as REC-approved general (thematic) biobanks. They are listed here:
