Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in the treatment of depression in older adults: Review.

This project is in progress as research articles.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a well-documented treatment approach for depression, and in particular treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Most of the research on TMS for depression is with patients of working age, and we know less about the efficiency and safety of TMS for depression in older adults. However, TMS is relevant as treatment because the incidence of TRD is higher for older than for younger adults, the risk of depressive relapse and chronicity is greater, and depression in the elderly is generally associated with high mortality and comorbidity. The main aim of the project is to provide an overview of what recent research says about the effectiveness and safety of TMS for depression in older adults with depression and TRD, and to discuss implications for research and clinical practice.
