Research Summary

Hemochromatosis and iron metabolism have been the research interests of Dr. Distante since 1996, when the responsible mutated genes were discovered. During her PhD studies, she investigated the prevalence of such mutations in Norway with main focus on factors regulating their phenotypical expression. Her collaborative works on the evolution and origin of the mutations have suggested that they are thousands of years old. In this regard, Vikings might have contributed to their spread along the European coastal areas, where the mutations are highest in prevalence. Dr. Distante has been a member of “joint scientific committee” for “Hemochomatosis International” since 2015. Her attempts with other members have led to several fruitful results such as writing international guidelines for diagnosis and treatment as well as a consensus study on screening of hemochromatosis.
