Dr. Bang has worked as a researcher on the competence unit at RASP since 2010. His current research activities focus on biological and environmental risk factors for eating disorders. He is also involved in research on brain alterations in eating disorders, and the comorbidity between eating disorders and other mental disorders. Lasse is currently receiving a research grant from Health South-East (for the «EDGE» study, see below).

Ongoing research

Eating disorders: Genes & environment («EDGE»):The vulnerability for developing eating disorders is caused by both genetic and environmental factors, but our understanding is limited. In the «EDGE» study we are investigating genetic and environmental risk factors (e.g. bullying and trauma) for eating disorders. By collecting saliva samples from participants, we will investigate the genetic variations underlying risk for eating disorders. «EDGE» is currently recruiting participants, read more at www.EDGE-studien.no(in Norwegian). The«EDGE» study is partially funded by a research grant from Health South-East

Structural brain changes in patients with anorexia nervosa: The brain shrinks in patients with anorexia nervosa. This shrinkage reverses with weight-restoration. We don’t understand the biological mechanisms that lead to this temporary shrinkage, nor the clinical significance of these brain changes. This study will investigate this further, by studying the relationship between brain mass, biochemical, and clinical variables in patients with anorexia nervosa. The study uses brain images (MRI-images) from patients with anorexia nervosa that has undergone treatment at Oslo University Hospital.

Overlap in symptoms between eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): Studies have shown that many patients with eating disorders also have OCD. We do not understand the relationship between these disorders, and to what extent patients with OCD have eating disorder symptoms. This study will investigate the comorbidity between eating disorders and OCD, in patients at Oslo University Hospital.
