COVID-19 in partients with pituitary disease

Patients with pituitary disease often have disorders in the regulation of various hormonal systems. It can lead to overproduction, underproduction or lack of fine-tuning of hormones in everyday life, but especially in stressful situations such as an infection. In particular, the stress hormone cortisol, which is controlled by the pituitary gland, has a great influence on the body's immune system and stress response. People with pituitary disease may therefore be more prone to infections, and it is possible that they cope with stressful situations and especially infections less well. There is a lack of good records of the extent to which patients with pituitary disease are more vulnerable or may have more severe courses of covid-19 disease.

The aim of the study is

  1. to describe the incidence of Covid-19 in pituitary patients at Oslo University Hospital, and possibly several other participating hospitals.
  2. to describe the course, treatment and outcome of Covid-19 in patients with pituitary disease at OUS, other participating hospitals and hopefully nationally.

Good national data will also be important for international comparison and a contribution to the European registration within Endo-ERN.

The study is planned as an observational study with registration of covid-19 disease in patients with pituitary disease. In the first phase, it is planned to record the course of covid-19 disease of pituitary patients admitted with covid-19. In the late phase of the pandemic and up to one year after the pandemic, it is planned to systematically register whether patients have been ill with covid-19. To ensure that all patients are registered, it is planned to link the registration from the current study to the Norwegian Pandemic Register.
