Head of Section, Section for Clinical Neurophysiology, Department of Neurology Oslo University Hospital. Also affiliated as senior researcher at FORMI (usikker på hva som er engelsk betegnelse på FORMI..)

Kristian Bernhard Nilsen is Senior Consultant Clinical Neurophysiologist. He has earlier worked as Senior Consultant at National Institute of Occupational Health – Oslo – Norway, and as associate professor at Institute of Neuromedicine and Movement Science – Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Teaching experience:
Regular lectures on clinical neurophysiology for ph.d courses (University of Oslo), courses for education of consultants in Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology (Norwegian Medical Association), and master courses in pain management and physiotherapy (Oslo and Akershus University College).

Research projects:
Project leader for the projects:

  1. “Exploring the genetics of neuropathic pain”
  2. “Clinical and neurophysiological aspects of peripheral neuropathies”
  3. “Sleep disturbances, inflammation and pain”

Nilsen is project manager for “Neuroscientific Resarch and Quality Registry at Oslo University Hospital”

Supervising experience

  1. Main supervisor for 3 ph.d students at Oslo University Hospital
  2. Co-supervisor for 2 ph.d students

Methodology and interests
His research is focused on pain mechanisms. He is currently leading projects focusing on how sleep disturbances affect pain mechanisms, mechanisms for neuropathic pain, studies of carpal tunnel syndrome, and studies of the reliability of human pain “surrogate” models. He is also involved in studies of narcolepsy, migraine, genetics of sleep disorders, genetics of pain, as well as studies on health effects of shift work. He has published about 50 peer-reviewed papers. In his clinical work he is involved in the clinical investigation of patients with various neurological diseases, including all kinds of painful neuropathies.
