Medical research depends on human biological material stored in biobanks. About half of the research projects at Oslo University Hospital includes biobank material. OUS has the largest collection of human biological material in Norway. The use of the material and the clinical information connected to it has enormous potential in the development of new therapeutic knowledge. The scientific value increases with time and with improvement of methods since many studies need years of observation after analysis or intervention.
There are increased focus on traceability and accessibility on biobank material. A well-organized infrastructure is essential to improve and secure valuable material and to assure use and quality of the material. In additional to our department, the hospital has established a Biobank and Registry Advisory Board. Our common goals are to enforce standards and guidelines and to assure that the material in the biobanks are collected, stored and used in the best way for the society.
