Definitions

Ploidy number

Haploid

Haploid Cells having 1 set of chromosomes representing the basic genetic
complement of the species (n, germ cells).

n

Euploid

Cells having an exact multiple of the haploid number of chromosomes
(diploid, triploid etc.).

1n,2n, 3n etc.

Diploid

Cells having 2 sets of chromosomes (non-dividing somatic cells).

2n

Tetraploid

Cells having 4 times the haploid number of chromosomes.

4n

Polyploid

Cells having more than 2 chromosome sets (as triploid, tetraploid etc.).

3n, 4n etc.

Aneuploid

Cells having more or less than an exact multiple of the haploid number of
