Ahlquist and colleagues identify time of occurrence of specific methylation events in colorectal development.

The Ahlquist study of showed that promoter hypermethylation of 11 analysed genes is extremely rare in normal mucosa from cancer-free individuals and gradually increase in normal mucosa from cancer patients, via benign polyps and towards malignancy. The study conclude that ADAMTS1, MGMT and MAL are suitable as marker for early detection. In addition, CRABP1, MLH1, NR3C1, RUNX3 and SCGB3A1 are identified as classifiers of the microsatellite instable malignancy phenotype.
